Noragami: Episode 2 – “Snow-like”

[HorribleSubs] Noragami - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_01.01_[2014.01.13_23.46.06]This is the best way to start the episode. Hiyori is such a cutie.

Flash Rating: Down; 5/10

The generic Shounen cliche aren’t necessarily killing the story but I don’t feel much potential in the series to stand out. Enjoyable to watch but bland formula.

Hiyori Iki continues to fall in and out of her body against her will which doesn’t seem to be much of a nuisance. Yato explains to Hiyori the importance of the Regalia (Sacred Treasure?) in which Hiyori takes it upon herself to find a suitable spirit for Yato. Hiyori gets herself in a pickle when she stumbles upon a “suitable,” contender to be Yato’s Regalia in turn allowing Yato to stumble upon a lost spirit – a middle school boy named Yukine – who becomes Yato’s new personal weapon.

Characters:

[HorribleSubs] Noragami - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_22.12_[2014.01.14_19.00.28]Yukine (雪音)

Not much is explained about this kid in this episode but he is a lost spirit Yato summoned as his Regalia.

Discussion:

I’m really liking Hiyori as a character. She’s cute and whimsical especially when it comes to getting tasks done, and though she talks like an airhead it is pleasantly balanced out by her eccentric nature. Other things I enjoy about this series mainly revolve around the flow of the plot and the BGM make the scenes way way better. The art and Yato’s VA are already on the top of my list for pluses for this series. On the other hand, I’m not enjoying the direction this series is taking. It’s far too generic for Shounen these days and I’m going to keep supporting my claim that this show is a mix of Blue Exorcist, Soul Eater, and Bleach. Also, Yato isn’t necessarily a very appealing character. He has his quirks but that zero to hero trope is too strongly built on to the point that the outcome of this series is far too predictable.

Concerning Hiyori’s little disposition, how has her soul falling out of her body not brought on some serious repercussions? Chronic fainting is symptom of some serious illnesses but she just passes out against her will especially being unable to wake up? I’m all against realism when it comes to fantasy genre and stuff but using it as a comic relief already got old with this episode alone. It’s pleasant that no one freaks out about it and I’m sure the scenarios would seem way more sarcastic and fitting when drawn in a manga.

So we figure out about the Regalia this time around and still stay clueless on what Yato’s deal is doing jobs for 5 yen a pop. We know he’s a little unusual, he was manifested from a wish, and he smells nice (?). But he knows he’s being ripped off for doing 5 yen jobs as long as he can get a beer out of it. On the topic of his smell, Hiyori made a few comments about his smell in the first episode, and the green crab phantom repeats it during this week’s chase scene. What makes Yato smell so good to phantoms but to spirits like Yukine and the late Tomone he smells sweaty and gross?

Predictions

I don’t know. I had a bit too much beer, I just want to watch Oreimo and other wincest.
