Nagi no Asukara Episode 5

[HorribleSubs] Nagi no Asukara - 05 [720p].mkv_snapshot_12.16_[2013.10.31_21.01.46]

From being completely uninterested in this show to potentially being on my list of best anime this year is still a huge surprise to me. Nagi no Asukara pulls the right cards balancing interesting plot in a fantasy world while sprinkling in enough drama and interesting character relationships to keep you attached. Many elements in Nagi are reminiscent of one of my favorite tear jerkers: Ano Hana (あの日見た花の名前を僕達はまだ知らない) which isn’t too surprising since both are written by the Mari Okada who is famous for her romance genre titles and the theme of forbidden love. This episode, many of the growing character conflicts become more pronounced, the resolution of the conflict between Miuna and Akari earns a slight moment’s reprieve, while more potential issues arise.

Opening to Hikari and Akari’s father, Tomori Sakishima, while praying to the sea god Uroko explains that the sea god is urging Shioshishio to cut all ties with the surfaced civilizations and become solitary. Tomori announces that his daughter is her own person and her decision to stay with her boyfriend on the surface is her own decision. We get a sense of forewarning through Uroko hence his slightly devious reactions and his notable interest in the situations taking place.

Manaka learns of Chisaki’s romantic interest in Hikari and based on her stammering and clumsy retort, it seems Manaka becomes troubled at this development. Her interest in Tsumugi is left unclear in this episode, however after learning of the law in Shioshishio banning relationships between humans on the surface, this isn’t too surprising.

Through flashbacks, we learn about Miuna’s confusion with accepting Akari as her potential step-mother and Akari’s bottled up guilt. Miuna acts out and runs away from home which puts Akari in a state of panic causing Hikari to gather his friends to find the runaway third grader. Hikari, through his rash overprotective beheviour, helps Miuna and his sister accept each other’s guilt and brings closure between the two.

I hadn’t really noticed the series’ music until now as it compliments the emotions of the scenes almost perfectly, constantly sending chills up my spine. I applaud the cohesion of great paced storytelling without the unnecessary emotional scenes feeling forced with sappy music.

My thoughts:

I’ll keep it brief for now since everything is getting real in the series. I have gained a huge sense of respect towards both Hikari and Akari. Hikari accepts his sister’s choices and urges her to fill in the gap that causes Miuna to feel lonely while Akari also accepts her decision to be there for Miuna. I feel like this opens up a whole new plethora of potential drama, but the scenes are incredibly touching despite the sappy and trite dialogue. Miuna also solidifies as a key character in the series and I’m curious to see her role in the story later on. Also, with rising conflict between Chisaki and Manaka, Hikari will definitely end up torn in some love triangle but I’ll avoid too many hard predictions. Hikari had a moment of self realization after his conversation with Miuna where it seemed like he was questioning his love towards Manaka, not to mention that since he accepted his sister’s love of her boyfriend causing her to risk banishment, he must have considered the same scenario between Manaka and Tsumugu.

Even though we are only 5 episodes into this 2 season series, I should prepare my box of tissues when the drama really hits.

Predictions for next week:

More conflict, more confusion. Since this episode was centered around Akari’s situation, it’s safe to assume we’re going to become more involved with other characters and stray a bit from Hikari being in the spotlight. Hikari seems to be the center of this show so just keep expecting him to be the centerpiece to the stage.

Flash rating:

8/10

(I’m gonna try to implement this into my weekly reviews. Based on every episode per week, this rating may change based on favorable or unfavorable occurrences throughout the series.)
