Crucifix’s Top 15 Anime Openings for Fall 2012

Oh Fall 2012. You’ve given me so many great things this year. Halloween candy, devil survivor 2, my driver’s licence, and of course this surprisingly great season of anime. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting it to be this enjoyable. Now that school has settled down a bit, watching anime has become one of the things I’ve dedicated myself to diligently practice. I tried in spring, the so-called “GREATEST SEASON IN YEARS”, but I fucked around too much in high school and Nicki Minaj’s “Pink Friday” was far too important to ignore. Even though I never kept up with the shows themselves, I still listened to the openings and endings featured. That’s when I started to realize that I had listened and given recognition to more opening and ending themes than actual shows. If you played “Duty Friend” by NIKIIE, I could tell you dead on the spot that it was the ending theme to that one “Lupin the 3rd: Legend of the Tits” show. I indulged in learning most of the openings for seasons of anime and figuring out which deserved to be put on my iPod. A good resource for doing so were the popular “My Rankings of [INSERT SEASON, YEAR, ANIME, etc] Openings or Endings” videos from channels like LlamaOP, where almost all shows of the season/year/whatever are ranked by someone. People would be able to find new openings, discuss their feelings on the person’s choices, and overall just enjoy the variety of good Japanese music provided.

So that’s what I’m essentially doing with this video. It’s very straight forward and simple so I wanted to add to my own rankings for this season. I thought of doing commentary, but it would just distract from the song and I also hate listening to myself speak. So naturally, you would too. Instead, let’s go in depth (through a post) on why I chose each song. Just to be clear, this list contains openings that I genuinely enjoyed. Never am I going to force myself to listen, contemplate, and then rank all 50+ show themes. I see a lot of youtube users doing that and frankly it’s a waste of fucking time. Most of these openings are from shows I’m currently watching and some are suggestions of friends. Like #7. I wouldn’t have put that on my list if Takashi never told me about it. Same goes for others like To LOVE-Ru and Bakuman. So without further ado, let’s get to My Top Sick Ass Openings of Fall 2012.

15. Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!

“Sparkling Daydream” by ZAQ

WHOOP WHOOP PULL OVER THAT ASS IS TOO- yeah whatever. I almost went cross-eyed when I first saw this opening. But that’s one of the appeals to it. The innovative style and dual screen look make it very memorable and awesome to watch. Plus, there are plenty of cute fuckers running across screen, winking, to make a baby throw up rainbows. Song wise, there isn’t anything special instrumentally, but the vocalist is so incredibly strong and enthusiastic that I can’t help but bob along with that booty.

14. Jormungand: Perfect Order

“UNDER/SHAFT” by Maon Kurosaki

Anyone else watching this show? No? Damn. It’s pretty evident from this opening that you’re really missing out on some intense, black lagoon styled gun fights and bodacious females. Since this is the second season of Jormungand, I’ll have to compare it somehow to the first’s theme. They bring back some of the Engrish lyrics and electric-guitar riffs but it doesn’t really compare to Borderland which is one of my favorites of the year. Setting that aside, it’s still a solid OP.

13. Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun

“Q&A Recital!” by Haruka Tomatsu

Colorful, enthusiastic, and cute. Just like the show! Except with trumpets!

 12. Code:Breaker

GRANRODEO is known for their songs featured in anime openings/endings. So I’m a bit biased to put this in here, thanks to Kuroko’s Basketball and Needless. Nonetheless, I don’t think any of you can disagree with me when I say that this song rocks.

11. To LOVE-Ru Darkness

I’ve never been into To LOVE-Ru and I’m glad to say that hasn’t changed. Not much of a softcore dude. It’s still an awesome opening though. The animation was really well done and Ray has made this song very addictive. Plus the man has a harem whore house. Can’t hate on a true pimp.

10. K

“KINGS” by angela

This song is pure hype and would have been ranked MUCH higher if it weren’t for a few gripes I had. The animation itself is extremely pleasing to the eye; starting off with a freefall through the city and moving onto a floral introduction of each (somewhat) important character. As these characters are being introduced, angela’s powerful voice is backed by a loud church-orchestral chant of “Revenge/Repent/BluePants”. This part of the track gets my blood pumping, ready for some more vocals and a powerful chorus. Yet, once the chorus hits, I start to cringe. The sounds are awkward, not matching up with the rest of the blood pumping shounen esque notes. You can say that my feelings for this opening are a lot like the show itself. I don’t know what to think. In one end I’m getting eye-candy, awesome action, and a beautiful soundtrack. But on the other end I’m getting forced Yaoi situations (not that there’s anything wrong with that) and plot holes. Those twists in the track just hurt. Like I said, I don’t know what to think. Oh well. If I can drive to it, it must be good.

9. Bakuman 3

“Moshimo no Hanashi” by nano.RIPE

Although every nano.RIPE song sounds exactly the same, extracting the same formula and sound for each new single, I have no problem with any of their songs. It’s kind of like Coldplay. Their songs that become popular are eerily similar to one another. Yet, each still get me singing along. That’s what this opening did. Also, Bakuman looks like tons of fun and I really need to start season one soon. Solid OP.

8. Sword Art Online OP2

“INNOCENCE” by Aoi Eir

What a great opening. Love or Hate this show, the song is still kick-ass. Sure, it doesn’t top Crossing Field from season one, but I give this one mad props for getting me to enjoy a show I’m so broken up about.

Look how emotional I’m getting. These wounds, they will not heal.

7. Girls und Panzer

“DreamRiser” by Choucho

Muthafucking girls in them muthafucking tanks. In all seriousness though…Choucho is the amazing. Wasn’t a big fan of Hyouka, but Choucho dominated that opening as they did here.

6. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure (2012)

“JoJo: Sono Chi no Sadame” by Hiroaki TOMMY Tominaga

For me, It’s a toss up between this and number five for the best looking OP of this season. The song, although not appealing to everyone’s expected Japanese music tastes, gives off this feeling of nostalgia and testosterone that made me fall in love with every frame of CG and creative manga homage provided. It just works. Amazing opening.

5. Psycho-Pass

“abnormalize” by Ling Tosite Sigure

Just like number six, the visuals are top notch in this opening. But unlike number six, we are given a more modern rock song; featuring an energetic guitar, sporadically leveled vocals, and intense drums. I really liked this OP and can’t wait for the next one in this series.

4. Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo

“Kimi ga Yume wo Tsuretekita” by Pet na Kanojotachi

Yeah this beat all of those above it. Why? Because I’m straight up addicted to it and I can’t help but get my daily dose. It’s not the song in particular, but this is fucking cute and I dig this kind cute. The visuals are nice and they’ve got cats. CATS MAN. I love cats. This was an awesome opening that matched the overall feeling of the show. Happiness, beauty, friendship, and felines.

3. Robotics;Notes

“Junjou Spectra” by Zwei

These last 3 choices are some of the best openings I’ve seen this year. Junjou Spectra is no exception. Every time I start Robotics;Notes, I get extremely hyped up to watch robots fight Manny Pacqiao style. Even though it’s not the real center of the show’s plot, the opening theme really gives you that mecha feel. Although the visuals aren’t really “stunning”, the animation is very fluent. Character’s are humorously introduced, whether by protecting their secret Char Aznable identity or waking up with a rape face on. I have no idea why people hate the characters in this show, because this amazing opening really made me fall in love with all of them before it even started.

2. Btooom!

“No Pain, No game” by Nano

Another Hype as fuck opening. I’m starting to see a trend here. This OP teeters on being the new Deadman Wonderland of the year and it really shows. I don’t even want to talk about the visuals (they’re alright) because Nano’s incredible singing destroys this opening’s animation ten fold, giving a new meaning to hype. Hype is now defined as “No Pain, No Game”. Even with English lyrics scattered in the song, it decimates Jormungand’s  by ∞. Thank you Nano, for pronouncing things correctly whilst staying in key.

1. Magi

“V.I.P” by SID

SID has been featured in a few great shounen shows like Bleach, FMA: Brotherhood, and now Magi. This song is so perfect. Magi has a lighthearted feel to it and the opening features both that and it’s kick-ass cast of characters doing kick ass things. Similar to the Full Metal Alchemist  Openings, the music and the visuals match perfectly and one never overtakes the other. That’s why it’s my best opening for the season. Still can’t get it out of my head.

So that’s it for this season! Hope you enjoyed this and remember to NEVER skip the opening! It’s part of the anime!
